My Crazy Salad Recipe Starts in the Fridge
I love to throw together a plethora of different ingredients to make up a crazy salad. This salad recipe is versatile and it can be different every time, based on what I’ve got in the fridge! They are great salads to pack in a to-go container to take along to work or to throw together on weekends for a quick-fix, healthy lunch.
Don’t Be Afraid to Mix and Match Temperatures
I used to be afraid to combine warm foods with cold foods, but I got over that and now there’s a whole new world of crazy salads in my repertoire. If you have this same affliction, I highly recommend you give it a try…add warm meat to a cold salad and BE OKAY WITH IT!
In this salad, the ground turkey, mushrooms, and broccoli were served warm and the rest was cold, except the golden berries and sunflower seeds which were room temp.
Guidelines So You Can Make Up Your Own Crazy Salad!
The kitchen sink is the limit – don’t let the “but I don’t think that will go together well” thoughts creep in your head. Don’t allow the “that’s not a salad ingredient” thought hold you back. This is YOUR SALAD, make it CRAZY!
Okay, so there are a few guidelines to help you achieve a TASTY crazy salad recipe…
First, salads are loaded with vegetables. When choosing your veggies, pay attention to the textures that will play together in your bowl. Choose several Crunchy ingredients and 1-2 Carb and Chew ingredients from this list or make up your own:
|Buttercrunch Lettuce||Sweet Potato||Sunflower Microgreens|
|Cold Spaghetti Squash||Goldenberries||Seeds|
|Cabbage||Peas||Other plant protein sources|
One of the worst offenders of omega 6 fats that hide in grocery store diets is salad dressing! So think three times before using a store-bought dressing! Either choose from one of the few good ones or make your own – it’s easy and you know exactly what goes in your body! Check out this other post for more on salad dressings.

Kitchen Sink Salad
This crazy salad really doesn’t have all that many ingredients. What made it great was the combination of warm and cool foods. This one has:
- Leftover steamed cabbage (served cold)
- Diced zucchini
- Sliced beets (or pickled beets would be good, too)
- Ground pork (warm)
- Lightly sautéed kale (or raw would be good)
- Topped with kraut
Five ingredient made this Fish Salad recipe great:
- Sautéed spinach (warm)
- Spaghetti squash (cold)
- Butter crunch lettuce
- Cabbage slaw (link to recipe)
- Leftover fish (served either cold or warmed just enough to take the chill off. Be aware, though, reheating fish too much makes it chewy.)
I have to say, this salad recipe is one of my favorites! The balance of crunch, carb, and chew was perfect!
- Pea shoots
- Leftover mashed cauliflower
- Raw sprouted pumpkin seeds
- Orange mini bell peppers
- Spaghetti squash (cold)
- Plantain chips, store-bought or make your own
- Flax seeds
- Alfalfa sprouts
